Chem Film
Chem Film Coatings, (also known as Chromate Conversion, Alodine or Iridite) are a chemical conversion coating that is used to passivate aluminum. It is intended to improve adhesion of paint finishes and other coatings, as a corrosion inhibitor, providing less corrosion resistance than other finishes such as anodizing. It also serves as a base for organic coatings while leaving dimensions unchanged. The most commonly referred–to-standard for applying chromate conversion coatings to aluminum is MIL-DTL 5541. Chromate conversion coatings are easily recognized by their distinctively greenish-yellow color on gold chem film and no color for clear chem film.
Elite Metal Finishing provides Chem Film Coatings in three variations:
- Type I Gold (Class 1A and Class 3)
- Type I Clear (Class 3)
- Type II RoHS Compliant (Class 1A and Class 3)
Advantages of Chem Film Coatings:
- They provide valuable properties that extend the service life of parts
- Minimal surface oxidation of aluminum parts
- Conversion coatings are both cost efficient and economical
- It is an ideal “surface treatment” for paint adhesion and other coatings
- Does not change part dimensions
