Humidity & Salt Spray Testing in Florida

With Florida being surrounded by the Atlantic Ocean and Gulf of Mexico, humidity and salt are a factor for many industries. Humidity and Salt Spray Testing is an accelerated or rapid corrosion test. The goal is to measure the comparative corrosion resistance of materials exposed to humidity, salt spray or salt fog.

Following the testing, information on metals and coated metals concerning their corrosion resistance is measured and compared. The suitability of coatings, paints and metals to resist corrosion or exposure to harsh environments can then be determined.

Humidity & Salt Spray Testing Benefits

  • Uniform controlled environment
  • Performance results
  • Corrosion resistance data
  • Meets military and regulatory standards
  • Results in a higher quality end product

Salt Spray Testing is also known as ASTM B117 and Fog Testing

ASTM stands for American Society for Testing and Materials. ASTM B117 was the first internationally recognized salt spray standard, originally published in 1939. The ASTM B117 Salt Spray Test standard is used extensively to measure normal corrosion resistance to ocean water type environments. The test duration depends on the specification or the corrosion resistance of the material. ASTM B117 is commonly used for metals, plastics, woods, and coated materials of all kinds. Ideally two or more materials or finishes are compared.

Salt Spray test is used to:

  • Relate the corrosive resistance of various metals or finishes
  • Measure the corrosive inclination when a metal or coated surface is scratched
  • Determine coating adhesion and corrosion creep
  • Evaluate corrosion resistance in a marine environment (wetness, temperature, salt fog)

Testing periods can range from a few hours to more than a month depending upon the specifications. Requirements are agreed upon between a customer and their manufacturer prior to testing.
